I was seeing at a Rubbermaid shed the other day and was struck by the care and potential that goes into sheds these days, even the cheap orchad sheds many of us have in our backyards.
The old days when a wooden shed was about as good as it gets are long gone. Look nearby the gardens of your friends and neighbors. You will find metal sheds, plastic sheds and even vinyl sheds. Occasionally you'll find a wooden one, but contemporary materials and manufacturing methods seem to have pushed the original lumber structures to one side.
Homes Gardening
This is not all a good thing, to my way of thinking.
What's wrong with wood? It is long lasting. I remember the wooden warehouse sheds in our home and our neighbor's when I was a boy. It lasted for several decades and ours would maybe still be standing, only we sold the house home and it was carted off to a new lot with the shed and carport discarded and left behind.
Also, a wooden shed can be changed and adapted without any trouble. Need some more shelves? Just build them in! I did this in our carport recently, and was surprised at just how easy it was to take some old lumber and fashion it into a set of sturdy, beneficial shelves. Want a bench? Get out your tools and build one!
Try doing this in a metal shed. It's possible, but you may need special, ownership shelving or bench units from the shed manufacturer. Or in a plastic warehouse shed. That is just not possible.
In a wooden orchad shed however, you just need some lumber, a saw and hammer.
A well maintained wooden shed will keep your orchad area and backyard tidy and neat for many years.
